Romans 6:1-13

In Romans 6:12 it says, "Let not sin reign in your mortal body."
In these scriptures we are taught that we need to destroy the sin in our lives before we can be baptized and let our Savior compensate for our short comings.
There are a couple of events from Christ's life that are symbolized during baptism.
First when we are submerged into the water that is symbolizing the death of Christ. It also symbolizes for us the death of our temporal lives.
Then when we are brought back out of the water we are symbolizing the resurrection of our Savior. We are also symbolizing us being born again through Christ.
For that reason we don't believe that we can be baptized by the sprinkling of water. When we are only sprinkled we don't go through the death and resurrection part of baptism which is the most meaningful to us, and the most symbolic to our Heavenly Father.
We are letting our earthly selves die and giving ourselves over to Him.
We know that although we have sinned we can now repent for our sins and become new because of what our Savior did for us. Through this we can maintain the "newness" of life and always striving to be better.
We know that if ask for forgiveness and change we can start with a clean slate.
In Mosiah 3:19 we learn that the natural man part of us would ideally die at baptism.
Through baptism we can be made free of the being the servants of sin and be made the servants of righteousness. Then consequently you become the servants of God.
Once you are the servant of our Heavenly Father you can be made free. He will not take away sin but he will help you overcome it. He will show you a better life and will motivate you to want to live this way.
Through getting baptised we make a covenant with our Heavenly Father where we promise to remember Him and he promises to always let His spirit be with us so we can be comforted and guided.
